If there is such a thing as a jack of all music genres, that is how Lorin Ashton should be described. Lorin's early music influences are metal rock band, specifically Metallica and Nirvana whose styles are clearly integrated in his music. For some time, he got involved with international death metal and black metal but his gentle persona somehow made him feel odd doing so. This started his creation of his kind of music which were done underground.

During 1990s, when airwaves were dominated by rave music, he succeeded in incorporating metal and rock with rave and has created numerous genre-bending music since. This was the time when started attending parties and realized he loved to be involved in music that keeps a celebration going. He got more involved in party production and in 1996 moved to Santa Cruz for Education. Lorin Ashton majored in Community Studies and minored in Music Education. He was contemplating on a teaching career when his passion for music took over.

He began producing underground music in 2000 which surprisingly took above ground and eventually hit both national and international music market. He was then known as DJ Lorin playing in San Francisco Bay Area at Burning Man. In 2002, he started performing as Bassnectar.
