Norfolk is Virginia’s second largest city. It is also an independent city and the oldest city belonging to the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. It is surrounded by bodies of water on two sides, namely the Chesapeake Bay on the north and the Elizabeth River on the west. This strategic location has made Norfolk the site of the world’s largest naval base, the Norfolk Naval Base and the headquarters of the management of the world’s largest fleet of US-flag vessels, Maersk Line, Ltd. In line with this, shipyards, cargo shipping companies and other port-based enterprises have likewise flourished in the city.

Norfolk is a highly urbanized city that is connected to its neighboring cities and towns via an extensive network of bridges, interstate highways, tunnels and the only existing bridge tunnels in the country. Also considered as the cultural center of the Hampton Roads region, Norfolk is home to numerous museums, performing arts organizations and several venues for performances of all forms.

Most performances in Norfolk are held at the Chrysler Hall in the downtown area. It is a part of the Scope complex which also holds the Scope Arena sitting alongside it. Built in 1972, the Chrysler Hall is the residence of the Virginia Ballet and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, as well as the regular venue for Broadway shows produced by JAM Theatricals. It is also a frequent venue for numerous concerts and comedy shows.

The NorVa is another one of Norfolk’s leading performance venues. Originally a movie theatre in the 1970s, it served as an athletic club in the 80s before it was renovated to become a performance venue. The exterior of the building is very distinctive for its rustic design, but it is more prominently known for its state of the art acoustics and luxurious backstage amenities. In 2008, The NorVa was named by Rolling Stones Magazine as one of the top five rock venues.

One of Norfolk’s historic buildings is the Wells Theatre, built in the early 1900s by brothers Jake and Otto Wells, who owned the largest chain of theatres in the South during that time. Some of the notable artists who performed at the Wells Theatre include Fred and Adele Astair, Will Rogers, Maude Adams and Will Rogers. For 33 years now, the Wells Theatre has been home to the Virginia Stage Company. In 1980, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark in the National Register of Historic Places because of its well-preserved Beaux Arts neoclassical design.
