Spokane is Washington’s second largest city and the largest city of Spokane County. It takes its name from a Native American tribe of the same name which translates to “Children of the Sun”. Also, nicknamed “Lilac City” because of its flourishing flowers since the early 20th century, Spokane is a center for mining and agriculture and is considered to be a significant contributor to mining in the country since the discovery of gold and silver in the early 1880s.

Interestingly, Spokane is also considered as the place of origin of Father’s Day. It is likewise host to the world’s biggest 3-on-3 basketball tournament, the Spokane Hoopfest. It has been twice named by the National Civic League as All-America City, in 1974 and 2004.

Spokane’s The Knitting Factory is one of the more recent popular music venues in the city which opened in 2008. Situated in the heart of downtown Spokane, it can hold 1,500 people and is considered as one of the top venues in the Northwest. Famous names that have performed here include Jewel, Gabriel Iglesias, Snoop Dogg and Sara Bareilles. Aside from being a concert venue, it also has a restaurant and bar that can cater to private functions.

The Fox Theater Spokane has had a long history in the city of Spokane. Opened in September 1931, it started off as a movie theatre, the largest in the city with a 2,300 seating capacity. During that time, it was one of the most technologically advance movie theatres in terms of audio-visual facilities and also accommodated live performances by some famous industry personalities like Katherine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.

Sometime in 2000, plans were made to demolish the building but advocates led by Miss Myrtle Woldson raised funds to save and renovate it. It re-opened in 2007 as the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox to commemorate Miss Woldson’s father. Now, it is home to the Spokane Symphony and hosts numerous performances throughout the year. It has also been included in the list of National Register of Historic Places.

In September 1995, Spokane opened the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena to be a venue for sporting events. It is now the residence of the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League and Arena Football League's Spokane Shock. The arena can fit anywhere from over 9,000 to over 11,000 people depending on the event, making it the perfect venue for major concert tours and huge sports competitions. Some of the performers who have held concerts here are Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Elton John. It has also been used by the WWE for its various events. Within the arena is the Star Theatre, a smaller venue that has a capacity of over 5,500.
