Charlottesville is popularly known as the home of two former U.S. Presidents and houses Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the University of Virginia.

Although small in geographical size, the city of Charlottesville offers numerous venues and destination hotspots for both locals and tourists alike. The city is known to offer a variety of hiking and ballooning activities, as well as beer and wine tours and several entertainment performances which are housed in several larger events places. The city is also home to a rich indie music scene and is also the home of the Dave Matthews Band. Charlottesville boasts of being home to many recreational areas such as the Shenandoah National Park, a great place to enjoy breathtaking scenery and partake in various recreational activities, as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In addition to this, the city is plays host to a variety of annual festivals such as Charlottesville Festival of the Photograph and the Virginia Film Festival.

The John Paul Jones Arena, also known as the JPJ, is conveniently located within the campus grounds of the University of Virginia. Considered as the biggest arena in Virginia, it can approximately seat 14,500 spectators. This particular arena was named after the father of Paul Tudor Jones, who donated millions of dollars for the construction of the said arena. The John Paul Jones, asides from hosting to a variety of sports events, has also showcased as series of live performances, concerts and other forms of events. Some of these shows have included performances made by the Cirque du Soleil, comedy acts of Larry the Cable Guy and Disney on Ice.

Also located within the city of Charlottesville, the Paramount Theater was opened to the public in 1931 and was designed by Rapp and Rapp as a movie theater. From its opening until 1974, it had only showcased movies. The theatre was reopened in 2004 after an extensive renovation and is currently a performing arts events place which is operated by a non-profit organization.

Another famous local venue place in the city of Charlottesville is the Jefferson Theatre. Built in 1912 originally as a cinema and Vaudeville theater, it was designed by an architect named C.K. Howell. In 2006, the theater was closed for major renovations and at present, it is considered as one of the premier performing venues in the area.
