Expanding sports in other countries is not just common in football, baseball and hockey – it also happened in professional basketball here in the US. This occurred in 1995 when the National Basketball Association (NBA) expanded the number of teams by adding the Toronto Raptors as well as the Vancouver Grizzlies. However, the only Canadian team that was left was the Toronto Raptors as the Grizzlies moved to Memphis and they are now known as the Memphis Grizzlies.
The logo of the Toronto Raptors is, of course, a velociraptor wearing a basketball jersey and dribbling the ball. The Raptors are part of the Eastern Conference and under the Atlantic Division. Just like any expansion teams, struggling is a typical part of the first years. Although the first official NBA game of the Raptors was a win against the New Jersey Nets, this did not translate into success. The first season of the Raptors was marked with a very disappointing 21 wins and 61 losses. The lone bright spot of that year was that they defeated the mighty Chicago Bulls featuring the come back king Michael Jordan. The following year was marked by 9-game win improvement as the tandem of Damon Stoudemire and Marcus Camby (sophomore and rookie respectively) was starting to bear fruit. Another bright spot for the team was to defeat powerhouses like the Bulls, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz, but they had a hard tme defeating cellar-dweller teams. The next season marked several roster changes in which their players include five rookies with the like of Tracy McGrady (who was just 18 at that time eventually became an All-Star). The next season was probably one of the best for the team as their move of trading their 4th overall draft to acquire Vince Carter, which was the 5th pick.
The years of 1999 up to 2002 marked the start of success for the team as Carter emerged as an All-Star. It was the 2001 season that propelled the team to their first ever Eastern Conference finals in which they lost to Allen Iverson and his Philadelphia 76ers by just a basket in game 7. With Carter on the team, the Toronto Raptors became a contender in the East in which they were able to reach playoffs, but with little success. In 2003, they drafted Chris Bosh and in 2004, Vince Carter was traded leaving Bosh as the new franchise player. With Carter gone, the team had mixes of success and struggles reaching playoffs.
The 2011 season was another devastating year for the team as their franchise player opted to play with Miami Heat alongside LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. Presently, the team is in the rebuilding process in which their franchise player and go-to guy is Andrea Bargnani.
