Pretty Lights
Derek Vincent Smith is Pretty Lights. Smith hails from Fort Collins, Colorado and is an American electronic music artist. He also owns the label with the same name Pretty Lights and has several artists of similar genre under his label. Smith was a college dropout from University of Colorado because he wanted to focus on his music instead.
Pretty Lights started in 2006 with drummer, Cory Eberhard and was later on replaced by Adam Deitch in 2010. The name was taken from a Pink Floyd poster that said “Come and watch the pretty lights!” Its music is a by product of digital sampling and according to Smith, his music is called “electro hip-hop soul”, meaning a mix between electronic based music and beats from hip hop and soul music.
In 2007 and 2008, Pretty Lights participated in several major American music festivals like Bonnaroo, Rothbury, and Electric Daisy Carnival among others. In the same period, they also did a lot of tours in the different cities in the US and in the year 2010, Pretty Lights performed at Coachella Valley Music Arts and Festival, as well as at Ultra Music Festival in Miami.
In 2011, Smith launched his state of the art light show that used LED towers that made it look like a cityscape. Also in the same year, Pretty Lights released a remix of John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Road”. Smith described this track as special and once in a lifetime.
Pretty Lights is involved in the following genres: electronic music, funk, hip hop, soul, trip hop, and dubstep, and plays at festivals around the world.
Currently, they have six albums in total. The first one was released in 2006, and the album was called “Taking Up Your Precious Time”. It contains the song “Finally Moving”, a song that was popular to its fans and a favourite at live performances. The album had 15 tracks. They also have 3 EPs which were all produced in 2010, 3 live sets and 1 collection.
Pretty Lights hopes to showcase new material intended for live setting or dance culture.
