Wildcats became the name of the team when a writer from Chicago Tribune branded the players of Coach Glenn Thistletwaite in 1924. But before they came up with such name, the team encountered several changes in their name and that include The Purple and The Fighting Methodists.
Northwestern Wildcats is different from other teams joining the Big Ten Conference since it is the only private school. All other teams are state universities or public schools. The pride of the team is their overseer Athletic Director Jim Phillips who is dedicated to making sure that everything is organized and that includes the sustainability of the team.
The team has a very distinct tradition. This includes the students extending their arms and acting as wildcats with their growls. This happens when the team is on defense position. This is their way of contributing to the team’s fighting spirit. The Northwestern University WildPride Spirit Squad is in charge of leading the whole citizenry of Northwestern University during their games. They are also the ones who are performing during half-time breaks and events especially in their home.
One very distinct part of their tradition is throwing marshmallows during football games which Coach Gary Barnett banned because of causing distraction to the games and also the performance of their players. Though the activists approve this kind of act of the students, there are some like their coach who are against and as much as possible they would like to protect the integrity of the team and pursue clean fights. As long as Barnett is the coach of the football team, the marshmallows are on hold.
Northwestern Wildcats team is not only focusing on football but also on basketball, golf, softball, swimming, lacrosse and a lot more. They have a mascot named Willie the Wildcat who is always present during the games to excite the fans more by giving freebies and also opportunities for them to get in touch with him through picture taking and autograph signing.
The usual rival of the team especially in football game is Illinois Fighting Illini and watching them compete with each other is action packed. The presence of the two teams in the limelight is attended by a staggering number of students and fans.
