Kathleen Mary "Kathy" Griffin is an American actress, comedian, and author known for her biting humor on social issues on politics, pop culture, religion and sexuality. She is regarded as one of the top comedians in the United States, placed on 17th on Oxygen's list of "The 50 Funniest Women Alive" in 2007.
Kathy was born in November 4, 1960 in Oak Park, Illinois. Being the last of the five children in the family, she had a peculiar habit as a child. She was very talkative. One of her past times were going to neighborhood houses everyday to engage in long talks. Those were her first stand up shows. Unfortunately, she had a rough childhood and was suffering from eating disorders. As a young girl, she harbored a dislike on organized religions for the harsh treatments she and fellow students had recieved from the nuns at her Catholic elementary school.
In high school she became active in musical theatre which motivated her to become a professional actress. That had caused arguments with her parents in her senior year. They wanted her to enroll at a regular college. But her persistence gave her her first TV appearance as an extra on a Chicago White Sox commercial and connections in the local talent agencies. Convinced, she and her parents moved to Los Angeles to support her long walk to fame.
She studied drama at Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in 1978, then joined a budding comedy group, The Groundlings. But it was in the 1990s that things started turning to Kathy's favor when she appeared as a guest star on several TV shows and got a supporting role on the NBC sitcom, Suddenly Susan(1996-2000), and her reality show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (2005–2010). Her first album, For Your Consideration (2008) landed at the top of the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart. She also published her memoir, Official Book Club Selection released in June 2010.
Her often controversial satire on pop culture, politics, and religion has earned her friends from the progressives and enemies from the conservatives, not to mention that she's also a gay rights activist who considers herself as a "militant atheist". Highly awarded, yet, banned every now and then from certain shows for her outrageous humors, there's always a show somewhere else more than ready to present her to an ever growing audience.
