Doobie Brothers
The Doobie Brothers is an American rock band who was inducted in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. Throughout its career, The Doobie Brothers has sold a total of over 40 million albums worldwide. The band is composed of Tom Johnston, John McFee, John Cowan, Patrick Simmons and Guy Allison.
The early years of the band started when John Hartman was introduced to Tom Johnston who was then already a guitarist/songwriter. Eventually, the two decided to form a group which was later on known as the Doobie Brothers. At first, Hartman and Johnston called their group as “Pud” while experimenting with the lineup of their band. They performed gigs around San Jose, California. Mostly they performed as a trio together with Greg Murphy. In 1970, they decided to form a group with David Shogren and Patrick Simmons. Together they were known as the Doobie Brothers as they perform around North California during the 1970s. They were able to build a strong local fan base among the local chapters of Hells Angels. Soon after, they were offered a recurring gig in the biker’s favorite hangout place, the Chateau Liberte located in the Santa Cruz Mountaines. In 1980, the demotapes of the band were illegally released on Pickwick Records with a title Introducing the Doobie Brothers. Their demo led to a contract offer from Warner Bros. Records.
In their debut album, the Doobie Brothers surprisingly got rid of their initial image of leather jackets and motorcycles. Instead, they released their self-titled album with a country influence and acoustic guitar vibe. Their second album, Toulouse Street, became the band’s breakthrough success. It includes hit songs such as Listen to the Music and Jesus is Just Alright. Their collaboration with Bruce Cohn and Ted Templeman resulted to the band’s more polished music accompanied with eclectic sound. After this, more hits followed such as Long Train Runnin and China Grove. Through the years, there were a lot of changes in the members of the group.
