Charlottesville is considered as an independent city located in the state of Virginia and is the center of the Charlottesville Metropolitan area. The John Paul Jones Arena, also known as the JPJ, is conveniently located within the campus grounds of the University of Virginia. Considered as the biggest arena in Virginia, it can approximately seat 14,500 spectators. This particular arena was named after the father of Paul Tudor Jones, who donated millions of dollars for the construction of the said arena. The John Paul Jones, asides from hosting to a variety of sports events, has also showcased as series of live performances, concerts and other forms of events. Some of these shows have included performances made by the Cirque du Soleil, comedy acts of Larry the Cable Guy and Disney on Ice.
Also located within the city of Charlottesville, the Paramount Theater was opened to the public in 1931 and was designed by Rapp and Rapp as a movie theater. From its opening until 1974, it had only showcased movies. The theatre was reopened in 2004 after an extensive renovation and is currently a performing arts events place which is operated by a non-profit organization.
