It’s hard to tell if there is someone who doesn’t know the song “Don’t Speak”. During the time when the song hit the airwaves in the 90s, everybody was humming and singing to it, transforming it into a major chart-topping hit. It landed on the top spot at the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart and stayed there for 16 weeks. After that, No Doubt became known as a band to watch out for and since then, they managed to maintain their stardom. And the members remained the same with Gwen Stefani as the vocalist, Tom Dumont as the guitarist, Tony Kanal as the bassist, and Gabrial McNair as the drummer.
Unbeknownst to many, Tragic Kingdom, the album where “Don’t Speak” was a part of, was not the band’s first album. The group hailing from Anaheim, California, actually started way back in the mid-1980s. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1992 followed by their second effort with The Beacon Street Collection in 1995. But it was only with their third album that they gained a huge following and acquired sky-high sales. It also included hits such as “Just A Girl”, “Spiderwebs”, and “Sunday Morning”. Their next album Return to Saturn was less successful than their previous one but it spawned hit singles “Simple Kind of Life” and “Ex-Girlfriend”. Their fifth album Rock Steady was another success and it soared higher than their previous effort. Two of its singles, “Hey Baby” and “Underneath It All” bagged the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the Grammy Awards.
It was 2004 when No Doubt took a long break from the music scene, each of them focusing on other endeavors. Stefani embarked on her solo career and came up with the albums Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and The Sweet Escape. Dumont also worked on his project, Invincible Overlord. Young and Kanal worked and collaborated with other artists such as Bow Wow Wow and Pink. Finally, the band announced that their new album Push and Shove will be released in September 2012. Their first single “Settle Down” was first heard in July of the same year.
