Born and raised in Hawaii, Mars comes from a musical family and grew up with music in the household. After high school he went to Los Angeles to start a musical career. He started out as a producer and songwriter. At the same time he was also doing backup vocals for other artists. He wrote songs for Adam Levine and Maroon 5, Brandy, Sean Kingston, and Alexandra Burke. He co-wrote “Get Sexy” by Sugababes. He also co-wrote “Nothing on You” by B.o.B., and “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy. He also produced Cee Lo Green and B.o.B.'s “The Other Side.”
The breakout year for Bruno Mars was 2010 with the release of his first album, for which he won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards in 2011. He followed that up with six nominations in the 54th Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Solo Performance, Record of the Year and Song of the Year, as well as a nomination for Producer of the Year for Non-Classical music.
