Arizona Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a professional baseball team from the West Division of Major League Baseball’s National League. This team had many early successes. They are currently based in Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. The Arizona Diamondbacks is also known as the D-backs.
The franchise of the Arizona Diamondbacks had been through a long way. The increase in size of Phoenix as a city over the past decades has paved the way for a baseball franchise. In 1980s, Martin Stone and Elyse Doherty who owned the triple-A minor league baseball team Phoenix Firebirds tried to have an expansion team in the area. They decided to have a new stadium that would be shared with Bill Bidwill of the football team, St. Louis Cardinals. Unfortunately, the plans did not continue as Bill Bidwill to lease the Sun Devil Stadium at Arizona State University. This move instantly ended the bid of Stone for the franchise. The following attempt was in 1993 by Jerry Colangelo who was then the owner of the NBA team Phoenix Suns. He wanted to apply for an expansion team in the Major League Baseball. Colangelo received a lot of support from other prominent people such as Jerry Reinsdorf the owner of Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox and Commisioner Bud Selig. Finally in 1995, Colangelo received the franchise for the 1998 season where he paid a total sum of $130 million franchise fee to Major League Baseball.
Since their foundation, the Arizona Diamondbacks has received an early success in the league. Within the first five seasons, they were able to win three division titles in 1999, 2001 and 2002. They also won a World Series championship and a National League pennant in 2001. In their second season, they were able to reach their 100th win.
