Before the era of Justin Bieber, there was Paul Anka. One of the biggest teenage idols in the ‘50s. You kids nowadays might not know about him, or may have heard a little and might thought of him as ancient and irrelevant. But you can’t totally dismiss him, though. Because one way or another, his songs such as “Lonely Boy”, “Diana”, “Put Your Hand On My Shoulders”, to name a few, probably had got your parents or grandparents feel the tingles and there you go. You are born. And you can thank Paul Anka for that.

Paul Albert Anka was born in July 30, 1941 in Ottawa into a family of Lebanese descent. As a youth, he sang with the St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church choir. Anka recorded his first single "I Confess" at age 14. He went to New York City for an audition for Don Costa at ABC in 1957. The song, "Diana", rose Anka to instant fame as it landed number one on the Canadian and U.S. music charts, and became one of the all time best selling singles by a Canadian artist. More Top 20 songs followed up in 1958. "It's Time to Cry"(#4) and "(All Of a Sudden) My Heart Sings"(#15), made him one of the biggest teen idols of the time. And he was only 17, young but mature enough to write songs for Tom Jones’ biggest hit record "She's a Lady". "My Way" is a song popularized by Frank Sinatra, but its lyrics were written by Paul Anka based on the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed in 1967 by Claude François and Jacques Revaux. Anka also wrote "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" for Buddy Holly which Holly recorded just before his death by plane crash in 1959. He gave his composer’s royalty to Holly’s family.

Anka’s enduring legacy doesn’t need to be cited with awards and titles. Our music loving elders will always cherish the innocence, the sweet memories he had shared in their hearts through his songs. Because of him, you can always put your head on someone else’s shoulder.
