Oakland Raiders Biography:
There are teams that are really good then there are those that have achieved legendary status amongst their fans and the Oakland Raiders are amongst those kinds of teams. The Raiders originally began in 1960 and were a part of the American Football League or AFL. When the NFL and AFL merged, the Oakland Raiders became a part of the Western Division for the AFC (American Football Conference) of the NFL. The team spent the first ten years in the AFL before the merge and since then has become one of the most popular NFL teams to date.
Before the merge occurred, the team faced off against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II but they lost the game. After the merge they got another shot to win the championships at Super Bowl XI, which was in 1976 and they played against the Minnesota Vikings. They earned another championship in 1980 when they unexpectedly defeated the Philadelphia Eagles. This was a sudden turn of events that propelled the Raiders into sports stars. Just two years after this they temporarily relocated to Los Angeles. In 1983 they fought against the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII and won their third championship title.
Starting 1985 the Raiders had begun to lose their momentum. They earned only one division title, which was in 1990, and for the rest of their nine season stay in Los Angeles they made it to the playoffs no more than two times. The team returned to Oakland in 1995. There was a slight resurgence in their playing power and popularity in the 2000’s when they made it to Super Bowl XXXVIII but they lost the game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They have been struggling to regain their momentum following this smashing defeat. As of the 2011 season they remain with an 8-8 standing.
While the team has seen its ups and downs their legend has become more than their statistical record. Even though they’ve nabbed three Super Bowl matches, one AFL championship, and several smaller titles they still lag behind some of the bigger teams like the Patriots. Despite all of this they have remained as one of the most popular teams and are recognized as an iconic group for the NFL.
