Def Leppard is an English band formed in 1977. The band first performed rock music in Sheffield along with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. The current members of the band include Joe Elliott as lead vocals, Rick Savage as bassist, Rick Allen as drummer, Vivian Campbell and Phil Collen as guitarists. As of the present, the current members are the longest-standing line up of the band.

The most successful years of Def Leppard was from the early 1980s to 1990s. Rick Savage, Pete Willis and Tony Kenning first started a band named Atomic Mass in 1977. During this time, Joe Elliot auditioned and was chosen to be the lead singer of the band. They performed their first gig in Westfield School in Sheffield. After some time, the banded decided to change their name to “Deaf Leopard” which was proposed by Elliott. Kenning suggested varying the spelling of the band name and so they became “Def Leppard”. By 1978, Steve Clark became part of the band through his audition piece “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Prior to the release of their three song album Def Leppard EP, Kenning decided to leave the band and later form his own band named Cairo. At first he was replaced by Frank Noon. Later on, Rick Allen auditioned for the band and became the new drummer. Their EP recording was a success after the single “Getcha Rocks Off” was played by John Peel who was the BBC Radio DJ. By 1979, they have started a fan base in UK and were considered to be the forerunners of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Eventually, they landed a contract with a major recording company, Phonogram/Vertigo. Their first album was released in 1980 entitled On Through the Night. Their second album High Dry in 1981 started to define the style of the band. By their third album Pyromania, Def Leppard became a household name in the industry. Pyromania even ranked number 384 by Rolling Stone in their 500 Greatest Album of All Time. Through their career, they have already sold more than 100 million albums and are considered to be one of the world’s bestselling artists.
