The members of Vampire Weekend met while they were students at the prestigious Columbia University. Their first album was produced after they graduated from Columbia while they were all working full-time jobs. They are signed to XL Recordings which they are quite proud of as they wanted to sign up with a label like XL all along. In 2008, Spin magazine called Vampire Weekend the "Best New Band" of the year. They have described their style of music as "Upper West Side Soweto." One of their most successful singles was called Cape Cod Kowassa Kowassa.
